DEATH HOWE - On the 11th June, Mr James Onesimus Howe, H.M. Customs, aged 41 years, late of Bury St. Edmunds. Home papers please copy. West Coast Times 13th June 1871 page 2

INQUEST Another inquest was held by Dr Garland as to the death of James Onesimus Howe, late officer of the Customs at Hokitika. The two witnesses examined were John M. Rice, officer of Customs, and Dr Maunsell, Surgeon Superintendent of the Hospital. The former stated that Mr Howe had been ill for thirteen months, and had gradually been getting worse and Dr Maunsell's evidence was that he found the membranes of the brain much enflamed and thickened, effusion of serum into the ventricles and subarachnoid spaces and the grey substance ot the brain was softened on both hemispheres. The other organs of the body were healthy. The cause of death was inflammation of the membranes of the brain. A verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was relumed.

West Coast Times 14th June 1871 Funerals have unfortunately to bo the subject of three distinct references in our present number. Yesterday was the day of the funeral of Mr James Onesimus Howe, an officer of the Customs, whose death we noticed a few days ago. Mr Howe's funeral was, of course, attended by all his fellow officers, the Custom House being closed earlier than usual and there was a numerous attendance of private citizens. The majority of those appeared in the procession in the place and costume of the Masonic Brotherhood, preceding the hearse and wearing their regalia the membership of both the local Lodges being largely represented.
