DEATH OF A FORMER MAYORESS
We regret to announce the death at The Ferns, West Street, on Wednesday, at the age of 82, of Mrs. Alice Mary PURNELL, widow of Ald. James Benham PURNELL, who was mayor from 1928-30. She carried out the duties of mayoress with distinction and charm, and lived to see her eldest daughter, Mrs. C. L. ELLERY, perform the duties of the same office with like efficiency. Mrs. PURNELL's step-brother is Ald. H. P. CHIVERTON, a brother-in-law of one of Ryde's best known former mayors, the late Mr. J. I. BARTON. She was a member of the Mead Lawn Tennis Club, of which Ald. PURNELL was a co-founder, and also of the Rowing Club, of which he was captain for a great many years. In the affairs of the Parish Church, where the alderman was churchwarden, she took an active part and did much valuable work in assisting in the organisation
