James Rastus Medlin was born November 9, 1847 near Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, son of Turner & Martha (Young) Medlin. He served throughout the Civil War. He served as the first county judge of Clay County, N.C. and, later, as sheriff.
About 1875, he moved to Lamar County, TX. In 1878, he married Miss Belle Ratliff. She died in 1902.
On Thursday, February 8, 1935, J. R. Medlin, age 87, died in Detroit, TX. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Detroit. He was Detroit's last Confederate veteran. Services were conducted by the Rev. P. F. Herndon of Paris at the home of his son-in-law, Claud Council. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery, near Biardstown, Lamar County, Texas.
