Ten days after the death of his brother Robert the family experienced a further blow when James was killed on 28 March in the war near Fort Beaufort. A report in the Grahamstown Journal of 4 April 1835 reported that within a few days after the death of Rawlins in the Tambookie country, his brother was slain at Fort Beaufort.
