Indenture from James Watson and wife to James Ritchie.

Oath of Samuel Ritchie, recorded.

On June 10, 1808 James' children, Nancy, John, Alexander, Rhoda & Mary signed an indenture (a deed or agreement) to John Berry. One other person signed the agreement. A Nannie Ritchie, relationship unknown. Since the legal age was 21, James' other children were unable to sign the document. Also, since James wife Mary did not sign, it probably means she was also deceased. It is my opinion that James never left Virginia and he died/drowned crossing Carr's Creek, near Coeburn, Russell (now Wise) Co., Va. Only his son Alexander and his family migrated to Kentucky. Alexander was on the 1810/1820 Clay Co., Ky census & the 1811 Clay Co., Ky Tax List, 1830/1840/1850/1870 Perry Co., Ky census.

RITCHIE FAMILY HISTORY...

The name RITCHIE seems to have been a very popular Norman name that came with William the Conqueror's overthrow of Saxon England in 1066. In old German, which descended from the Frankish dominions in Gaul (France), the name of Ricard denoted a powerful and brave chief or ruler. A large number began to appear in records of Scotland about a century after the conquest. The RITCHIEs apparently grew from the same orgin as another form of Richards and were a scept of the clan MacKintosh of the area of Dalmunzie, Scotland, whre the name was common. There were also MacRitchies that seems to have lost the Mac when most families came to America. Several RITCHIEs were found in the plantation era.

1. James RITCHIE

James RITCHIE was born in 1757 in Scotland. He came to America on a ship, "The Marrigold" from Liverpool, England along with several brothers and settled in VA. James married Mary Polly KEITH about 1775 in VA. Mary was born 1755/57 in Buncombe County, NC, the daughter of Samuel KEITH and Catherine RING. James died 1818 at Carrs Creek, KY.

James RITCHIE served in teh 2nd VA Reg. in the Revolutionary War, after which he moved to Buncombe, NC and is on the 1790 census with his wife Mary Polly KEITH RITCHIE and several children. They later moved to KY.

Mary Polly KEITH had three brothers, two; Gabriel KEITH and Ruben KEITH are on the 1790 census of Buncombe Co., NC. Gabriel was a spy for sometime to watch the Cherokee Indian movements.

James RITCHIE settled in Carrs Creek, Perry Co., now Letcher Co., KY. He drown in 1818 while crossing Carrs Creek. He was buried alongside the river but no one knows exactly where.

Children for James and Mary are:

2.Alexander Crockett RITCHIE

2.Henry RITCHIE

2.Mary Polly RITCHIE

2.James RITCHIE

2.Elizabeth RITCHIE

2.John RITCHIE

James Alexander Ritchie (Sr)

Military: James Ritchie served as a private in the 2nd Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. He was in the battle of Yorktown, where Lord Cornwallis was captured. James told a story about this battle, that before his regiment went into action, the officers had their men mix whiskey with gun powder and drink the mixture to make them "nervy". His son, Alexander Crockett, passed this story down to his own son, Gabriel Ritchie.

Ritchie Family History:

James Ritchie, son of Alexander Ritchie and Mary (Wilson) Ritchie, married Mary Polly (Keith) Ritchie, daughter of Samuel Keith and Catherine (Ring) Keith, in 1775.

They had the following children: John Sr., Alexander Crockett, Mary Polly, Henry, James, and Elizabeth.

After the Revolutionalry war, James moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, either on or before 1795. His wife, Mary (Keith) Ritchie, had two brothers there, Gabriel Keith and Reuben Keith and their families. They all show up on the 1800 Buncombe County, North Carolina census.

James moved to Virginia again between 1801 and 1802 because he was living in Russell County, VA in 1802 as a citizen. And, he applied for and received a land grant in Russell County VA in 1804. The Ritchie family lived beside the Cranes Nest river, (now Wise Co, VA).

About 1813, James moved his family to Perry County, Kentucky (now Knox County), to settle on Carrs Creek. He drowned while crossing Carrs Creek as it was swollen. He was buried along side Carrs Fork Creek of Troublesome Creek in Perry County, Kentucky. The exact location is unknown.

After James' death, all his children and his wife returned to Virginia except Alexander Crockett Ritchie. According to family tradition, James' wife, Mary, would visit their son, Alexander Crockett, in Perry County, Kentucky and stay for short periods of time.

The sons Ritchie brother John "Long John" Ritchie were Union Soldiers. The sons of his brother Alexander Crocket Ritchie were Confederate Soldiers. Their families fought against each other in the Civil War.

JAMES RITCHIE      James Ritchie was born in England, he sailed from Liverpool, England, about 1768 with five brothers, the ship that he sailed on was "The Marigold".  He came to Virginia and settled on the James River there in Virginia, while one of his brothers settled in East Tennessee and one brother in North Carolina, another brother John (Long John) Ritchie settled in Cranes Nest, Virginia. James lived in Virginia for awhile and then he moved to Buncombe Co, North Carolina,  his wife Mary (Keith) Ritchie had two brothers there Gabriel Keith and Reuben Keith.  James & Mary Ritchie lived there for some years, they are on the 1800 Census for Buncombe Co, NC and so are Mary's two brothers with their families. They moved to Kentucky sometime after 1800, they crossed the river at Carrs Creek in Kentucky and James Ritchie was drowned there in between 1811 and 1818. James family buried him along side of the river there, but no one knows the location of his grave today. After James Ritchie's death his wife Mary  with her son John (long John) Ritchie and all her family except Alexander Crockett Ritchie, went back to VA, Scott Co or Russell Co, John Ritchie's descendants are know living in Wise C, VA.

Alexander Crockett Ritchie was the only one of his family to stay in the Kentucky mountains, he had his pick of the land in Carrs, but it was to lonesome there, so he searched around until he found the nearest families, a few scattered ones in Clear Creek in Knott Co.  At the head of Clear Creek is some high pretty land called Hammonds Gap, it is here where all his children were born. Alexander  lived in a cave for awhile before his house was built up on  Hudson's Ridge, where Gabe Hudson's farm used to be, most of his children stayed in Kentucky and raised their families there, but a few of his children moved after 1850 to Madison Co, Arkansas, Isom, Hiram and some of the daughters and their raised their families there. James Ritchie was a Private in the 2nd Virginian State Regiment, during the Rev War, he fought in the battle of Yorktown with his brother JOHN (Long John ) RITCHIE, Yorktown battle date was September 28, 1781, where the British in command was Lord Cornwallis, he was captured.  A story that James told about this battle has been passed down through generations. He said that before his regiment went into action, the officers had their men mix up whiskey with gunpowder in it to make them nervy. After the War James went to North Carolina and was in Buncombe Co, NC in 1795 and on the 1800 census of Buncombe Co, NC. The NC census lists him as over 45 years old .

He moved to Virginia again between 1801 and 1802 because he was living in Russell County, VA in 1802 as a citizen and he applied for and received a land grant in Russell County VA in 1804. The Ritchie family lived beside the Cranes Nest river, (now Wise Co, VA)  Next they moved to Perry Co, Kentucky around 1815.  After their father JAMES RITCHIE died, crossing Carrs Creek, Alexander Crockett Ritchie's family  remained in Kentucky, the rest of the family with the mother Mary (Keith) Ritchie moved back to Virginia.  All his sons were in the Civil War, John Ritchie was a Union soldier and the other sons were confederate soldiers.  James DEATH: Drowned while crossing the river at Carrs Fork Creek, Ky.  BURIAL: He was buried along side Carrs Fork of Troublesome Creek in Perry Co, Ky, exact location unknown. Here are some notes on Alexander Crockett Ritchie.  Alexander, Betsie and their family moved from Russell Co, VA about 1809, they came thorough "Pound Gap" to Clay C, KY, they lived at Carrs Creek for a short while before going onto Clear Creek of Troublesome Creek in what later became Knott Co, Ky. Most believe that he is the Crocker Rickey that is on the 1810 Clay Co, Census, he is also on the 1820 Census of Clay Co, Ky, as Clocker Richie, both spelt wrong, but quite obvious that its him, his name is also on the 1811 and 1812 tax lists.  He was living with his son Isom Ritchie on the 1850 Census of Perry Co, KY and it has his birth place as North Carolina, we do not know why.  Alexander Crockett Ritchie lived in a cave while his house was being built for his family in Perry Co, KY. The site of the house is gone and the cave, it was obliterated when they stripped mined for coal some years ago. The cave and house were up on Hudson's Ridge, where Gabe Hudson's farm used to be.BURIAL: Ritchie Cemetery, Fisty, Kentucky.

James served as a private in the 2nd Virginia Regiment in the Revolution. He was thought to have been present at the battles of Monmouth and Kings Mountain. He fought at Yorktown along with his brother, John, and was captured.

Later James and Mary moved with more of their family to what was Burke and would become Buncombe County, North Carolina prior to 1790 when they appear in the first federal census. Also on the 1790 Census of Burke/Buncombe County are two of Mary’s brothers, Gabriel and Ruben. They all appear again on the 1800 census, but afterwards James and Mary move back to Virginia around 1801 or 1802. In 1802 James applied for and received a land grant in Russell County, Virginia in 1804. They lived beside Crane’s Creek in what is now Wise County, Virginia.

James and Mary moved on to Kentucky about 1815. James drowned crossing Carr Creek, a branch of Troublesome Creek, in Perry County, Kentucky, in 1818. It’s said he was buried near Carr Creek.
