Rowan was the same place that James P Ross, Sr. made his will in 1788. The will is online. In the will is mentioned Henry Ross as both a son of James Ross, Sr. and as exec of his will. Henry does not receive from the will, but would have to be an adult to be an exec. Also on the will of James Ross, Sr. is wife Jean, daughter-in-law Shaw, and an Anderson as one of the execs, the same as signed the marriage bond for Gene Anderson and Henry Ross in Guilford, 1786. Also on the will are four "minor" children of James Ross, Sr, including Benjamin Ross. Thus James Ross Sr, and James P Ross are evidently the same person. James P married first to Mary Woods. And later was married to Jean Shaw in Guilford around 1777 (see Guilford Marriage Records). Each wife had her own family. A son from the first marriage Henry Ross recorded a land deed in Rowan in 1785, that says on it Henry was of Guilford County, NC. It can be found online. Combined Census Records on Ancestry.com shows James and sons James and Henry Ross in Rowan in 1762.

This area would've been north of Thomasville close to the Guilford County line.

DNA Testing

Several descendants of James Ross are Participants in the Ross Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA.

They descend through his sons James P. Ross, II & Henry Ross. They all belong to a small group of matches that only contains descendants of this James Ross.

No descendants of any other sons of Hugh Ross, 'the Immigrant' have been identified as Participants in the Project. Therefore, Y-DNA has only proven the lines back to James Ross Sr.

There are also no Participants in the Project that have been verified as descendants of Rev. George Aeneas Ross, M.A.. At this point, the genetic signature of his family is still unknown.

Notes

Not the son of Hugh Ross, in Balblair

There is no evidence of the name of James's first wife. The wife of James Ross, U.S. Senator was Mary Woods, daughter of Col. George Woods. Col. George Woods was captured by the Delaware in Pennsylvania in 1755. It seems that these two Jameses have been confused & Mary Woods belongs with James Ross, U.S. Senator.

In 1884, James's great-grandson stated that his grandfather, James Jr., was born in Ireland and immigrated when he was 9 years old. If this is the case, it seems that it does not align for James Sr. to be descended from Hugh Ross, 'the Immigrant' who was already in Virginia as early as 1696. More Y-DNA evidence is needed to determine which North Carolina Ross lines are descended from Hugh Ross, 'the Immigrant'.

Virginia was a colony at the time of his birth.
