Biography

His Revolutionary War pension application states that James Ross was born in Martin County, NC, 8 Jun 1761. He married Liddy Courborn in Martin County. He was still living in Martin County when he entered the war. He lived there until about 1799 then moved to Anson County. And that he died 1 Jan 1849.

It includes an affidavit written April 9, 1851, by his brother William Ross that states that William was born in 1770 and that he was living, at the age of 81, in Union County, North Carolina.

This is not the same James as James, the son of William Ross Jr. & Mary Griffin. The Life and times of Elder Reuben Ross states that James, the son of William Ross Jr. & Mary Griffin, was born 19 Mar 1769. It also states that his brother William was born 17 Jan 1760, was a soldier in the Revolution, and died in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. A Will can be found there which was probated 24 May 1820. So, not the same William that provided an affidavit in 1851 in Anson County, NC.
