Biography

John Saunders and his brother James occupied jointly the farm at Boxford which their Grandfather had received grant of in 1651. Both were interested in lands at Haverhill and it was probably through inheritance. James was appointed to the General Court and in 1710 was appointed selectman and repeatedly represented Haverhill.

Judge Nathaniel Saltonstall was chosen to preside over the Salem witch trials in the 17th century; however, he found the trials objectionable and recused himself. Historians cite his reluctance to participate in the trials as one of the reasons that the witch hysteria did not take as deep a root in Haverhill as it did in the neighboring town of Andover, which had among the most victims of the trials. However, a number of women from Haverhill were accused of witchcraft, and a few were found "guilty" by the Court of Oyer and Terminer.

One of the initial group of settlers, Tristram Coffin, ran an inn. However, he grew disenchanted with the town's stance against his strong ales, and in 1659 left Haverhill to become one of the founders of the settlement at Nantucket.

Disputed Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Saunders-4101 (Comments, April 2020)

This isn't the right father either. Saunders-6518 and his wife Elizabeth had only one son named John. I've looked at what the History of Haverhill has to say about James In the footnote p. 207 " John Sanders, the first of that name in this town, was from Weeks, in the Parish of Dainton, County of Wilts, England. He made his will in 1670. The above named James, was we believe, a son of the first John. First point: John Sanders, if the first in the town, why isn't he mentioned earlier in the history? Second point: The John you have him attached to made his will in 1643, not 1670. Third point: Saunders-6518 left a will. He named only one child, John. Fourth point: Haverhill's author says only "we believe" this does not constitute proof.

There was a John in New England who made a will in 1670. Saunders-308, but he didn't have a son James either. Only two sons were named in his will.

I am detaching him from these parents. This James' parents are unknown, until such time as good evidence establishes his parents.
