James Scot listed above is not John Scott was baptised 16 February 1706 son bof odcThomas and Elizabeth Burton In Edinburgh, Scotland in 1706. He went to Northern Ireland in 1725 where he participated in suppressing a Catholic rebellion and lost an arm in the combat. (He was a Presbyterian)

Written in John Scott's Bible His Bible prove
1/ 7. Our coming to Carolinas Oct 1763. Our coming from Ireland June 1745. Our marriage 14 March 1740. John Scotte departed from life 12th November Anno Domino 1774 age 68 Margaret Scott Frost departed this life on April 16th 1801.

John Scott son Samue Scott l got the famiy bible which continues with and I quote

" Matthew Scott dyed In the year of our Lord 1772 Oct 3 Robert Mclelan died November 28 1772 Vilet Mclelan Oct 2 1772 Samuel Scott died December the 12th 1820, Martha Scott died Sept 10th 1862 94 years 2 months 5 days

John Scott came to Pennsylvania about 1740 and married Margaret Thornton on March 13, 1745. They moved to Virginia about 1760 and then to North Carolina in October 1763. He died in North Carolina (Probaby Guilford County) November 12, 1774. Margaret Thornton Scott died in Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1801. They had five children.

John Scott was born in Scotland, probably near Edinburgh, in 1706. It is unknown when he moved to Northern Ireland, but he was wounded in the Catholic Rebellion in 1725 and lost an arm. While in Ireland, he married Margaret Thornton on March 13, 1740. They immigrated to America in June 1745 and probably arrived at the port of Philadelphia. Several sources indicate that they lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1762 the growing family packed-up and moved South over the Old Wagon Road which ran East of the Blue Ridge through Virginia to the Piedmont region of North Carolina. They finally reached Guildford County, North Carolina in October 1763 and settled on a plantation along the banks of the Haw River.

John Scott was a Presbyterian and an Elder in Mr. Campbell's Church in North Carolina. He was clearly well educated and had remarkable penmanship. Because of his disability, he probably worked as a frontier teacher and small farmer. All of his children were also evidently well educated, at least by frontier standards. John Scott died at age 68 at Guildford Courthouse, North Carolina on November 12,1774. Margaret [Thornton] Scott died in Jessamine County, Kentucky April 6, 1801. The six known children of John and Margaret [Thornton] Scott were:

William Scott (1752- 1804) married Grizelda Carothers ca. 1770
Thomas Scott (1754-1834) married 1. Nancy Carothers February 9, 1775. 2. Sarah Ward October 6, 1800
Samuel Scott (1762- 1820) married Martha McCorkle August 5, 1783
Jinet (Janet) Nancy Scott--married James Carothers
Martha Scott--married Simeon Frost

Source: "Letter" from William Thomton Scott of Holton, Kansas to Dr. E. O. Guerrant Minister at Troy Presbyterian Church in Woodford County, Kentucky dated May 15, 1895. In this interesting letter (the original which was once in the possession of Miss Martha Guyn of Lexington has since disappeared), Mr. Scott was seeking information about a slate sundial that had been brought from Ireland by his grandfather, John Scott, and presumably was left behind. He planned to exhibit the sundial at the 1895 Atlanta Exposition. Mr. Scott stated, "John Scott, my grandfather, he was one armed, lost the limb in some of the Rebellions in Ireland." William T. Scott was the youngest son of Samuel and Martha [McCorkle] Scott. As perhaps the last surviving son of a "King's Mountain Man", he (Samuel) corresponded on several occasions with Lyman Draper during preparations for his book King's Mountain and Its Heroes (see the Draper Collection 34CC52-54).

I originally put in Samuel and Martha Scott of Guildford county as Vilet Scott parents. Yet since then have discovered I may have stated this may be the wrong Scott family in North Carolina.

Vilet may be the sister of Matthew Scott whose wife Bible showed proof of her death and marriage to Robert Scott October 2 Robert

Will of Samuel Scott dated 5 april 1777 probated 30 april 1777 children William; Margaret, Samuel and John. grandson Samuel [parent's names not given ex john scott.

Aug 30 1760 Rowan County NC will book [age 147 Will of John Scott sr...signed his mark. Probated also in 1760 mentions sons James and John scott ,daughter Mary Burnet. mentions John Fenny executor son John Scott, witnesses Rachel Hankins , Richard Brandon and John Patterson. On back of will shows his wife was Agnes.

From Buffalo Presbyterian Church Records William Scott, son of Samuel Scott Sr. located here in 1770.

( not this John scott family)
His father Samuel Scott Sr s/o of William and Mary of Lancaster Pennsylvannia was a member of the Nottingham colony but returned to Pennsylvannia. Samuel Sr. Gave hs son William 649 acres on the Reedy Fork in 1770. William had also returned to Pennsylvnnia with his father and perhaps married there before coming back to North Carolina His wife Rebecca, and his children Samuel, Thomas, Adam,William.,Mary, Margaret, Rebecca and Nancy. The third Samuel Scott married Mary Bell in 1793 and moved to Tennesse Thomas married Sarah Lemmons, Adam married 1st Mary d/o William and Mary Bell Donnell second mrs jane barr walker d/o james walker sr,and third polly rankin thoms, widow of samuel thom and d/o john rankin, william married martha donnell d/o william donnel and moved to tennesse;mary married samuel rankin s/o of john rankin in 1800; margaret married robert rankin s/o john 1805; rebecca married james white and moved to tennesse; nancy married james donnell s/o,Major john donnell in 1807 . William Scott senior died in 1801
Rowan County Land Deed 21 December 1761 Lord Granville granted 640 acres to Samuel Scott along the waters of Reedy Creek to Muddy Creek [now Moore County] He was part of the Nottingham Colony into North Carolina.

Samuel Scott secured two sections of 640 each on the waters of Reedy Fork m in what is now known as the Moore Community. He has at least two sons Samuel Jr and William.Samuel Sr. returned to Pennsylvannia , carrying all his family with him except Samuel Jr.who had married and was located there. [Samuel Jr died in 1797.

4-1781 Lord Granville [ signed by agents for John Cartetet] to Thomas Flack for 10 sh sterl 181 A on Walnut branch of Reedy Fork of Haw R adj William Denny and Samuel Scott,James Copeland Wm Hibson Prv'd July 1762 I put this in because their is a Jane Scott born 1740 died 1783 guilford married john bell of virginia in gilford 1778. Yet the dates of the other Samuel Scott [in Guilford to have Sally and Vilet do not match the possibility. This Samuel Scott secured 2 sections of 640 acres on the Reedy Fork in Rowan {Guilford Cty] North Carolina. on 4 December 1753 It is known he had at least 3 sons Samuel, John and William {John is mentioned in the will as executor] He also had at least two daughters Jane, Ann and Mary. He returned to Pennsylvania with his family leaving behind at least Samuel who had married and a family.

Our Mary Mclellan is known to have been raised by her Uncle William Scott. The timing fits for this to be the William Scott who raised Mary. James McLellan is son of Miss Scott who married Robert Mclellen brother William may have been raised by this William Scott...the timing fits.

Again this William the only William that lived in Guilford to live in Guilford in 1770. there is another William Scott' in Surrey NC 1789

This may not be the right family for our Vilet Scott as it is yet to be proven; yet it seems right. And until I have futher proof it is not the right family I shall presume it is the right William Scott Records show that this Samuel Scott who got land in the Nottingham Settlement in Guilford Cty North Carolina was at least second generation immigrant family
