• Info here about one of James Settee's grandmothers being the daughter of John Newton, b. 1695 to 1750. So that would make her a half-sister to John Newton (b. 1725) the theologian, who wrote "Amazing Grace".

From Saskatchewan: A History p.42 "James Settee, a graduate of the Red River School, was a school teacher at the Fort Ellice mission in 1842 when the Church of England sought to move out onto the plains. ... ordained in 1853... took over mission in the Qu'Appelle Valley in 1858 but was forced to close by Assiniboine and Cree who were worried about the half-breeds the mission would attract (and who would slaughter the buffalo).

in 1845 an Indian Catechist... came to La Ronge Anglican Church ... within 5 years all the Indians in the settlement were church going. Flora Ann & Joseph McAuley's son Joe Jr. tells of accompanying and carrying his knapsack or case at age 10. James was adopted in the USA was educated there and later became a clergyman ?"

• With regards to the above comment about James Settee's background, I was able to obtain a copy of a statement written by him that is filed in the BC Archives in Victoria, BC. In it, he states that he was born in a village near the Nelson River in Northern Manitoba in 1811-1812 and at the age of 11 or 12, was taken to Red River Settlement where he received an education and training as a member of the clergy in the Anglican church. He further stated that he was named James Nelson Smith, after (James) Hargrave, chief factor, (Nelson) Nelson River and (Smith) after his great grandfather Francis Smith, the captain of an HBC ship.

Link Biography of James Settee in DCBO. 1851 he was recalled to Red River, and December 25,1851 he was ordained as Deacon. One of the first native Clergymen in Rupert's Land. This info says this native child was taken in by Rev John West & /or Rev David Jones to be trained as a teacher & evangelist. The Winnipeg Free Press Obituary of a Nonagenariun , says he was buried March 25, 1902. Census of 1870 The family was in St. Peters Reserve, children at home still as folllows, George, Albert, Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia, Anne. Census of 1881 in Prince Albert District with Augustus Durie , grandson ( illegitimate son of Jane and William Lawrence Durie 1847-1885)
