About James Smith
James Smith
Born after 30 Aug 1688. In the apportionment of undivided land in Smithtown in 1736, certain lands were laid out to James Smith on the right of his father, Job Smith, but he did not sign the agreements for division of lands, made in 1735, 1753 and 1755. This indicates that he had already removed to the south side of Long Island. On Oct 10, 1740 James Smith of Moriches bought land in St. George's Manor of Captain Isaac Halsey, and on Mar 10, 1740/41 for £8 he bought 500 acres on the south side of the Peconic River from Timothy Hudson of Southold. On July 22, 1765, Ezekiel Smith sold to David Howell and to Josiah Smith land which would seem to be identical with the above tracts bought by his father, who had probably died before that time. The James Smyth who witnessed the will of Daniel Smith (9) was probably this James.
