He married Nancy "Ann" Knowles in the Parish of Milton in the County of York, the Parish of Downham, England on 17 January 1836, by John Wilson, Vicar. In the presence of Robert Smithies and Magdalen Knowles.
Married Hannah Crowther May 2, 1856, Endowment House, Salt Lake Territory, Utah.

"Funeral Services. ~ The funeral services over the remains of Brother James Smithies, lately deceased, were held today in the school house of Farmer's Ward. A spirited and instructive discourse was delivered by Apostle Jos. F. Smith. Remarks were made also by Elders A.M. Cannon and D.O. Calder, of the presidency of the Stake, Bishops Sheets and Mousley, and Elders Lorenzo Young and William F. Cahoon, all of whom spoke highly of the integrity and worth of the deceased.
Bro. Smithies was an active member in the Nauvoo brass band, and later acted as leader of the tabernacle choir. He was about seventy two years old, and was universally respected. His remains were brought to the city and interred in the cemetery."
