James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Galloway was born circa 1610.1 He was the son of Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Galloway and Grizel Gordon.1 He married Nicola Grierson, daughter of Sir Robert Grierson of Lag and Margaret Murray, in 1642. He died in June 1671.

He was created 1st Baronet Stewart, of Corsewell [Nova Scotia] on 18 April 1627. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Galloway [S., 1623] in 1649.2 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Garlies [S., 1607] in 1649.2 In 1654 he was fined £4,000 as a Royalist.

2nd Earl of Galloway James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Galloway (c.1610-1671) was the son of Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Galloway and Grizel Gordon. He m. after 22 Sep 1642 Nicola Grierson, dau. of Sir Robert Grierson MP, of Lag, co. Dumfries, by his wife Margaret Murray, 1st dau. of Sir James Murray of Cockpool. He was created on 13 Apr 1627 a Baronet of Nova Scotia, styled "Baronet Stewart of Corsewell", with remainder to his heirs male. On 19 Jul 1649 he succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Galloway.
