James Taylor Hoyt was a weaver in Connecticut, but became a farmer when the family moved to New York State, where he owned 400 acres west of Greenfield in Saratoga County. He was a whig and also an elder in the church. He married Rachel Starr, a distant cousin, on Jan. 11, 1798 in Bethel Connecticut. He and his wife were second cousins on the Benedict side of the family. She died in Michigan, where she was probably interred.
