About James Iredell Tredwell

James Iredell Tredwell was the son of Samuel Tredwell, and grandson of Benjamin Tredwell of Hempsted, NY. Samuel moved to North Carolina and was appointed Port Collector for the Port of Edenton by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in 1793. His appointment document is housed in the NC Archives. James Iredell Tredwell was named for his father's mentor, Supreme Ct. Justice James Iredell. James I. Tredwell moved back to NY in 1830 to work with his merchant cousins in the city. He died in Brooklyn in 1846, and is buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Manhasset.

In her book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs notes that her daughter Louisa was sent to live with James Tredwell and his wife Mary Bonner BLount Tredwell in Brooklyn during the Jacobs' family's escape from slavery in Edenton, NC.

James married Mary Bonner Blount at St. Paul's in Edenton, NC April 10, 1827. Around 1832 they moved to NY. They had 8 children: Margaret Frances (1828-1851), Jane Moore (1831-1854), Elizabeth Mutter (1834- after 1860), James M (1834 - died early), Helen Blair (1835-1837), Helen Blair (1837 - 1921), Adam (1840 - after 1900), and Frances Lenox (1843-1922). After James' death, Mary and the children moved to Washington, NC. Interestingly enough, the three older sisters all married Dr. William Trippe Bryan, as he became widowed by the older sister. Helen Blair Tredwell married her cousin, John Blount Daniel, they are buried in Wilson, NC. Adam married Annie May Baker, they are buried in Norfolk, VA. Frances married Edward Courtney Jenkins, they are also buried in VA.

James Iredell Tredwell and Mary Bonner BLount had at least 16 grandchildren.
