London businessman, pioneer settler and amateur wood turner who brought his own lathe when he migrated to Western Australia. The family, James, his second wife Maria Rockley and eight of his children sailed from Portsmouth in 1829 arriving in Western Australia in 1830.
The family then sailed down to their grants at Augusta. Woodward built the ship the Alpha. He returned to England in 1847 to plead for support for the settlement. He moved his pre-fabricated “Lismore House” to Perth where in the 1860s he employed ticket of leave men in his general dealership.

James Woodward Turner, small in stature, huge on Bulldog Tenacity. In Augusta, WA where he settled his family 1830, he built two ships to carry timber to Mauritius. He relocated his home, Ligmore House (prefabricated in England) to Adelaide Terrace, Perth in 1849, the RAC now stands there
