James Ussher, Archbishop of Armagh

Most Rev. & Rt. Hon. James Ussher was born on 4 January 1581. He was the son of Arland Ussher and Margaret Stanihurst. He married Phoebe Challoner, daughter of Reverend Luke Challoner, in 1614. He died in March 1656 at age 75.

He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, in 1598 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). He was a Fellow between 1599 and 1605 at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, in 1601 with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He was the Chancellor in 1605 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland. He was the Rector in 1605 at Finglas, County Dublin, Ireland. He was Professor of Divinity between 1607 and 1621 at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland. He was the Rector between 1611 and 1626 at Assey, Ireland. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, in 1614 with a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.). He held the office of Vice-Chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin in 1617. He was the Rector in 1620 at Trim, County Meath, Ireland He held the office of Bishop of Meath in 1621. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1623. He held the office of Archbishop of Armagh in 1625. He held the office of Prmate of All Ireland in 1625. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1626. In 1641 he attended the Earl of Strafford at the scaffold. He was Preacher at Lincoln's Inn in 1647.
