James Wookey was born in Claverhan, Parish of Yatton, Somerset in England. James' mother died 26.2.1835 at Claverham when James was 8 weeks old.. He was baptised the day of his mother's death presumably after she had died. His mother was buried at Claverham on 28.2.1835. James had five brothers and a sister and three half-brothers and an half-sister. James was an Ag. Lab. (Servant) living with Mr. Charles Lang Farmer Claversham, Yatton 1851 Census. James married Hannah Sellick at the Bristol Registry Office on 30 March 1856 in the presence of Samuel and Lydia Filer, Thomas Gilbert, Supt. Registrar. A son William was born to Hannah Sillick (Sellick) on 9.2.1856 and privately baptised on 5.6.1856 at Yatton. James, Hannah and William sailed for Melbourne on the sailing ship "Herald" leaving Plymouth 23.2.1859 arriving Melbourne 1.6.1859. James and Hannah first settled at Brighton where Lydia was born 1.10.1859 and registered at Brighton, John Simmonds Registrar. They then travelled date unknown to Coolart Station, Balnarring (Western Port) where James was a farm Labourer. Florence (Gordon's grandmother) was born on 8.6.1864 at Coolart Station, Western Port. This birth was registered on 19.7.1864 by James at Schnapper Point, William, Armstrong, Deputy Registrar. By this time James was able to sign his name. Henry James was born on 23.1.1866 at Coolart Station, Balnarring, the birth registered by James on 7.7.1966 at Dromana, Daniel Nicholson, Deputy Registrar. It is not known when the family left Coolart Station. Mary the next child to be born arrived on 12.11.1869, Hannah unable to sign her name and made her mark with a "X"". Alexander Hall was the Deputy Registrar. It is assumed James was a farm labourer in the district. He died at Gippsland Hospital, Sale on 26.9.1872 of Valvula of the Heart, Asthma and was buried in a common grave Sale Cemetery which cost one pound. The reason for him being in Sale is unknown. Hannah stayed in Woodside and married a Thomas Freeman at Mr. Maryweather's home Woodside on 24.4.1873 and produced another 3 children, Thomas, Dinah and Alice. There was another James born 1822 at Yatton which may have been a brother who died before James was born WOOKEY is habitation name derived from a place in the Mendip Hills, Somerset. It derives from the the Old world, meaning 'snare'or 'trap'.
