About James Washington Mathis, Sr.

Rice’s third son, James, married Rhoda Monk, and they had at least seven children: Wealthy, Pollie, Phoebe, Elizabeth, John, Mahlon and James W.  While they spent time in Bulloch, they lived first in Appling, and then 
Lowndes County, Ga.

He served as Justice of Appling Inferior Court 1825-1827 before he moved to Lowndes, GA. He served as 2nd Lieutenant of the Lowndes GA militia 1838-1842 fought to repelled the Indians in South GA. This was known as a part of the Indian Wars of GA.

His home was in Dist 790 of Lowndes GA where the present town of Cecil is now located. This area was included in the new county of Berrien in 1856. He moved to Cat Creek Community of Lowndes Co, GA lot # 1 of 11th dist and adjoining lot # 1 12th dist a few years before his death, and he was living there at the time of his death in 1859 with the post office name of Troupville, Lowndes, GA.

His estate was administered by his son-in-law , B. J. Roberts. He married Rhoda Monk on 7 Jul 1810 in Bulloch Co, GA according to the GA Marriage Index; they had eight children. Rhoda died in 1863.
