About James Washington
- Updated from MyHeritage Match via sister Faith Barker (born Washington) by SmartCopy: Sep 18 2014, 12:22:41 UTC
James Washington was born in Surry County, Virginia. In 1740, he sold his land in Virginia and bought land in North Carolina, on the South side of the Meherrin River, near the site of the present town of Murfreesboro. He was a representative from Northampton County in the North Carolina General Assembly for several terms, also a Justice of the Peace, Chairman of the County Court, and vestryman. He was married about 1734 in Virginia to a Joyce Nicholson. They had six sons: James, Robert, Benjamin, John, Ethelred, and Nicholson Washington; they had four daughters: Joanna, who married Charles Thompson, Mary who married James Sandy, Elizabeth who apparently never married, and Joyce who married John Long. James Washington's will, dated December 8, 1761, probated in May Court 1766, is on file in the office of the clerk of the Superior Court at Jackson, Northampton County, North Carolina.
