James Weaver McEwin was born March 18, 1888, near the Hopewell community of Lamar County, Texas, son of William Edward McEwin (1860-1940) and Virginia Lee (Wooldridge) McEwin (1862-1894).
He is the brother of Effie Kate (McEwin) Lee (1890-1971) and Alice (McEwin) Pittman (1892-1991) and half brother of Ores Eldon McEwin (1908-1973) and Edward ‘Dean’ McEwin (1912-1999). He attended public schools in Emberson, Texas. He was known by his middle name, “Weaver“.
On Dec. 7, 1911, he married Kitty Bell Lynch (1894-1982) in Antlers, Oklahoma. They lived in Chicota and Arthur City, Texas, all of their married life.
They are the parents of Robert James McEwin (1912-1929); Bruce Eska McEwin (1914-2006); Mack 'Lee' McEwin; Charles Kenneth McEwin (1919-1997); Kathryne Crook; Robbie Jo (McEwin) Dancer (1925-2006); Tom 'Sonny' McEwin (1929-2010); Roma Janice (McEwin) Dahl (1931-2009); Myrna Alice (McEwin Hutchison) Foster and Edna Virginia "Ginna" (McEwin Armstrong) Beaird.
Weaver was a member of the Chicota Presbyterian Church and the Chicota Masonic Lodge and had served as a school trustee at Chicota for a number of years. He was a farmer and groceryman. In 1976, he had 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
On Saturday, November 27, 1976 (a), James Weaver McEwin, age 88, passed away at 8:45 p.m. of a heart attack in St. Joseph's Hospital, Paris, Lamar County, TX. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 29, at Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Presbyterian Cemetery, Chicota, Lamar County, TX.
Footnote: (a) The inscription on his gravestone date appears to be in error, as he died on Sat., Nov. 27th, not Wed. the 17th, as verified on his death certificate, corroborated by family researcher & relative, Tory Crook, and the obituary giving notice in the Nov. 28, 1976, Sunday Edition of The Paris News, Paris, Texas.
