James Wharton and his brother John partnered with Joshua Humphreys at the Wharton and Humphreys Shipyard in Philadelphia. They outfitted the early gun ships including "Alfred", "Randolph", "Experiment", "Cabot", "Katy", for the new Continental Navy in 1775-1776 under order of the Continental Congress for the Revolution and defense of Philadelphia. He provided yardage material to Margaret Manny, a Philadelphia seemstress, for the making of the Grand Union flag hoisted by Lt John Paul Jones on the first flag ship "Randolph" Dec 1775. James served as Commissioner of Naval Stores during the Revolution.
