James and Elizabeth had begun their life in South Australia after the voyage from Plymouth, England, on 7th March 1850 on board the "Stag" arriving in June 1850. Although both were passengers on the ship they were not married until September the same year and began their family in Adelaide. Both James and Elizabeth had come from Middlesex and James' family had been brought up around the Friern Barnet and Colney Hatch area, and is believed to have had gardening interests. This line was to come in handy starting a new life in South Australia, as James along with his brother William, were recorded as working at the new Botanical Gardens, which was set up in Adelaide. James eventually moved to Mount Gambier and lived at Glenburnie where he grew vegetables, that were to be exhibited in the local shows and a display of ferns, was to receive a special mention in the Show Society's minutes and a recommended prize of £1 for his effort at displaying them. Articles and an advertisement appeared in the Border Watch a challenge by a Robe gentleman, Mr H. STEPHENS, who stated Mr PINKERTON grew an onion to 4 lbs 12 oz. The challenge was for two dozen onions to be shown against James' at the show in Mount Gambier in November and James' opinion was that the weight of the onion was "savor of blowing". A further challenge by James, advertised the sum of Five Pounds for five dozen onions and they were to be "deposited at the Border Watch Office by 15th February next". Gardening, James' life, has lived on through many of his descendants and a regular topic between family members.
