James William Stewart Family after his 1847 death

After J. W. Stewart's death from an unknown cause in 1847, his wife, Martha Ann Herman Stewart, took their only son, Willis Andrew Stewart (born approximately one year after their marriage and about one year old at J. W.'s death), to live with Martha's mother, Mary Birdwell Herman. Robert Herman, Mary's husband and Martha's father, died in 1843 leaving Mary a widow.

Neither woman remarried and are living together in the 1860 and 1880 census in Lauderdale, AL. Mary died in Lauderdale County, AL after 9 Jun 1880 since she was counted in the 1880 census on that date. Mary is listed as crippled on the 1880 census but not on the 1860 census.

Martha died in 1890 in Lauderdale County, AL and is buried in the Scott Cemetery in east Lauderdale County alongside her husband, J. W. Stewart.

Willis A. Stewart, son of J. W. and Martha Ann, fought in the Civil War, married Nannie Phillips, and in the fall of 1882 moved to Hopkins County, Texas were he lived until his death on 20 Dec 1920.
