On Monday, 20 January 1710, Jan (also known as Johann) Adam Peugel (from Gerbach, Germany) joined the VOC as "soldier" (which could mean anything between actual fighting soldier to general worker) with chamber Zeeland. He departed on the ship Oosterstein bound for Batavia (today: Jakarta). The ship arrived 106 days later at the Cape of Good Hope (today: Cape Town, South Africa) on Tuesday, 6 May. Puegel went ashore and remained behind when, on Thursday, 5 June 1710, 30 days after arrival at the Cape, the ship continued on its journey to Batavia. It arrived in Batavia on Friday, 8 August 1710, 64 days after departure from the Cape, 200 days after departure from the Netherlands.

Jan resigned from the employ of the VOC on 22 November 1712 after 1037 days. Unfortunately, Jan was not an asset to the Dutch Cape Colony. He was a sexual predator and paedophile, according to the legal records.

On 28 May 1714 Johann Adam Peugel murdered Jacobus van den Berge, SV/PROG at the home of Robert Jansz van Hoorn (PROG) and Catharina Cornelisz van Hoorn (Claasens), the latter being the sister of the victim's concubine Aaltie Cornelisz. Peugel had attempted to molest 14-year-old Maetje Robbertsz van Hoorn, b1 SM, the Van Hoorn daughter, and responded violently when Aaltje Cornelisz, b4 SM/PROG intervened. Peugel was sentenced to banishment and his property confiscated, but he had already fled.
