I found an entry online which corresponds exactly to Jan's marriage to Margaretha Hasewinkel (even in date). This record mentions a birthdate of 1694 in "Osterode". Although "Osterode" doesn't seem to exist, and the handwritten copy of the family tree that I got all this information says:

"The original of this was compiled by Robert Shand Gordon from particulars taken mainly from "Geslacht-Register de Oude Kaapsche Familien" (gecompileerd door Christoffel Coetzee de Villiers and published by George McCall Theal in HJune 1984. According to "Geslacht-Register" the original Jan Andries Truter "bass van Compagnies' tuin alhier" came from Oosterhout, province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. This copy of the original was made and extended by George Barrow Gordon on the 26/10/1974"
