Jan Christiaan het 9 kinders uit die huwelik met Maria Magdalena Philippina gehad. Die 2 oudste seuns was beide bekwaam as predikante van die NG Kerk onderskeidelik op Riebeeck-Wes en Laingsburg. Hy was ook die skoonvader van Generaal Jan Christiaan Smuts. Sy dogter Cato (Catharina Petronella Philippina Gerhardina is in 1866 met hom in die huwelik bevestig.
