Jan Adriaan Oosthuizen was born on the 8th November 1854 and died in Uitenhage on the 16th December 1936 aged 81 years. He was buried alongside his wife’s remains in the old section of the Dutch Reformed Cemetery in Uitenhage. His father farmed in the Prince Albert – Oudtshoorn district with ostriches on the farm Klaarstroom that he inherited jointly and later moved to the Willowmore area where he stood security for someone, landed in financial trouble and had to sell the farm he was on. He then moved to Uitenhage in approximately 1904 where he worked as a cartage contractor. My mother presumes therefore that his youngest son, my grandfather Ockert Almero Oosthuizen, must have been born while they were still farming as he was born on the 24th November 1902.

My maternal great-grandmother’s name was Elizabeth Maria de Vries and she was born on the 19th of July 1860 and died on the 2nd of February 1931. She was born in Prince Albert. My mother was too young to remember my great-grandfather who lived with them after her birth. She was told that her great-grandmother was very musical and played several musical instruments.

Jan and Elizabeth are buried in the Uitenhage cemetery: DRC2 7 J14 {self}
