GEDCOM Note

Maria Rutgers is confused repeatedly in Dutch Records as Maria “Pieterse” as is her sister Weyntje/Wyntje/Lavina “Pieterse”. But both are Rutgers, not Pieter Janszen Meet/Mead daughters but Step-daughters and half sisters to Kniertje Pieterse Meet/Meet; Giertruit Pieterse Meet/Mead, who died young Bef. 15 Mar 1663, Amersfoort, province of Utrecht, The Netherlands before the family’s Emigration in 1663; and Jan Pietersen Meet/Mead.

They are the daughters of Rutgers Wouterszen and Styntje/Christiana Jacobs (e). Pieter Janszen Meet/Mead was there step-father. Even though Maria and Weyntje are half-sisters to Kniertje Pieterse and Jan Pietersen Meet/Mead, they never went by Meet/Mead. It was assumed that it was their name due to the fact Pieter was their “Father” and a clerical error in the BMD Records was made repeatedly.

I labeled both sisters as so in my tree to help solve the confusing and to identify the right “surname” of that time, because while searching Dutch Reformed Church Records, Maria and Weyntje are sometimes listed as “Rutgers” daughters and in other records you find them listed as Pieter Janszen Meet/Mead’s daughters. I have yet to see them listed as “Maria Pieterse Meet/Mead” or “Weyntje Pieterse Meet/Mead” though. Only the Patronymic was used (Pieterse) since surnames were not used yet.

Rutger Wouterszen, place of birth is unknown; died Bef. 22 Sep 1654 in Amersfoort, province of Utrecht, The Netherlands; as did their son Wouter Rutgers Bef 15 Mar 1663. Their mother, Styntje/Christiana Jacobs (e), b. Bet. 1620 – 1623 in Eemnes, Amersfoort, province of Utrecht, Netherlands; died unknown Bet. 1671 – 1679 New York, New York, NY.

Styntje m. Pieter 22 Sep 1654 in Amersfoort, province of Utrecht, Netherlands, in that time period known as the Republic of the United Netherlands, or the Republic of the Seven United Provinces. Maria Rutgers, aka Maria Pieterse m. Joris Janszen Van Hoorn 11 Mar 1666, in the DRC New Amsterdam, New York, New York, NY. He’s b. 04 Sep 1645, Hoorn, province of Noord-Holland, Netherlands and had 8 children.

Weyntje Rutgers, aka Weyntje Pieterse m. Bef. 1669, Jan Wouterszen van Bosch, aka Bush or Johnson, had 9 children and their children used many surnames such as van Bosch, Bosch, Bos, Bush, Jansen, and/or Johnson. It made researching them difficult to locate their children and it’s still a work in progress. He was b. Abt 1638 in Ravensteyn, province of Noord-Brabant, Netherlands; d. Aft. 28 Feb 1707 in Flatbush (Midwout, later Brooklyn), Long Island, Kings Co., NY.

Jan Wouterszen van Bosch was also previously m. Bef 1654 in Europe to Annetje Arents and had 4 children by her.
