REMARKS: created Freiherr 3-8-1459
BIOGRAPHY Jan Popel was born about 1427, a younger son of Mikulas I z Ujezda a z Lobkowicz. With his wife Anna Svihovska z Ryzmberka, daughter of Wilhelm von Schwikowsky, chancellor of Bohemia, and Katharina von Wartenberg, he had ten children, including two sons, Ladislav I and Depolt, who would have progeny. Jan Popel was a faithful supporter of Georg Podiebrad, king of Bohemia. Together with his elder brother Mikulas II, Jan was made a baron (Freiherr) of the Holy Roman Empire on 3 August 1459.
On 4 March 1458 Johann II z Rozmberk, deeply indebted through continuous disputes, particularly through the wars conducted earlier by Johann's father Oldrich II, pledged the estate and castle of Helfenburk for five years to Jan Popel. Johann also pledged him the castle and estate of Rozmberk nad Vltavou from November 1464.
During the struggles for power between Georg Podiebrad's followers, including Johann II z Rozmberk, and the 'Grünberg Alliance' of nobles opposed to Georg, their leader Zdenek ze Sternberka, an arch-enemy of Rozmberk, captured Rozmberk nad Vltavou in January 1569, arrested Jan Popel z Lobkowicz and his son Depolt and held them in his castle of Krumau (Cesky Krumlov). Jan Popel fell ill in captivity and died in 1470. He was buried in the church of St. Veit in Krumau. Depolt remained imprisoned until 1475.
