From "The Peverell's of Dorset" Notes & Queries for Somerset and Dorset, Volume 1 by C. J. Creed, 1890 - Dorset (England). Page 87-88

Concerning the rest of this branch of the family I can add nothing to Hutchins’s account until we come down to
WILLIAM PEVERELL, of Burdolston, 8 Henry VIII, [1516-17] His wife was jane, daughter of Philip Baskerville, of Sherborne, Dorset. She survived her first husband, and married Sir John Mervyn of Fountel Gifford, whose first wife she became. She was buried at Fountel.

William Peverell had an only daughter and heiress,JANE PEVERELL, who married, first, Nicholas Meggs of Downham. By him she had a son, Lawrence Meggs. Bradford Peverell was held by his descendants until 1770.

Although Hutchins says she died in 1578,and that Nicholas Meggs died ‘circa 1579,’ thus making her predecease her husband, he states in his acccount of the Churchills that Roger Churchill, of Catherstone, married Jane, daughter of William Peverell, and widow of Nicholas Meggs.

This latter statement is no doubt correct, as we find in the Chancery Proceedings of the time of Queen Elizabeth that “joan Churchill, wz'dow,” had a suit brought against her by Thomas Lye, concerning damage to lands, and title deeds of lands held of the manor of Muckleford, in the parish of Bradford Peverell, and a tenement in Grymeston, held in fee. The manor of Muckleford had been held by the Peverells of Bradford Peverell, and seems, with other lands, to have passed on the death of Robert Buller, the grandson of John Peverell of Bradford, to the Peverells of Burdolston.

  • The following account with reference to the Coat of Arms of the Meigs family, was dictated by (890) M. Fayette Meigs, to a stenographer in the office of the author, Baltimore, Md., March 12, 1900.
  • "The Coat of Arms of the Meigs family is to be found in the old manor house, located at Bradford-Peverell, which is situated near Muckelford, England, a little hamlet consisting of seven or eight houses belonging to that parish, and anciently known as the Manor of Bradford Peverell . It is situated a mile west on the south bank of the river Frome. In 1663, Thomas Meggs, whose estate was much reduced by the naval wars, sold part of the Manor estate to W. Taurnton. The Manor was partially destroyed by fire in one of the early wars, but was restored during the lifetime of Jane Peverell, who married Nicholas Meggs (the name in England is always spelled Meggs). In a north window of the hall is the family Coat of Arms, which is very ancient and according to the records at White Chapel, London, was granted to the family by the Ruling Powers of England, by an act of Royalty prior to the year 1500. The Coat reproduced from that window, here presented, is an exact copy in every respect. The Coat of Arms was issued by letters patent by Clarenceux Cooke to one William Meggs, and is dated the 4 of June, 1579. This William Meggs, according to the early records to be found in London, died July 22, 1559, and in Doom's Day Book there is a notation showing that the date of 1579 is an error, and should read 1479. According to the early records the Coat of Arms was granted prior to 1500, which proves positive that it could not have been according to the last date, 1579.
  • In 1777, the Manor was again sold to John Pauling .... etc.

  • William Meggs, draper, in London, died July 22, 1559 ; married Anne ---- . They had numerous children. One, William Meggs, born at White Chapel in 1487, was an alderman in London. he married Judith West, sister and heir of Thomas West, bishop of Ely. She was born in 1477, and died in 1562.
  • "Their fifth child, Thomas Meggs, was born in 1507 ; he resided in Devon, Eng., Isle of Ely; he married Anne Coppleston of Exeter, daughter and heir of John Coppleston, gentleman.
  • "Their first child, Nicholas Meggs, was born in 1527, and at the time of his death lived in Dunham, in the Isle of Ely ; he died Nov. 20. 1579. He married Jane Peverell, daughter and heir of William Peverell of the county of Dorset, Eng. She died in 1578. The manor of Bradford Peverell in Dorset County, Eng., was held by Nicholas Meggs, and afterwards by nine of the Meggs family. The manor house was occupied, 1896, by the Middleton family. This house was in the Peverell and Meggs families from 1410 to 1610. In the great banquet hall is to be found a large illuminated window, representing the coat of arms granted to William Meggs by a patent dated June 4, 1479, in the reign of Edward the Fourth.

  • During the reign of Henry I (1100-1135) and Stephen (1135-1154) the manors of Bradford and Muckleford came into the possession of the De Port family as tenants of the Duchy of Lancaster. Adam de Port was outlawed and his land forfeited to King Richard I who, as we tell above, granted the manors to Robert Peverel but during the reign of Elizabeth I the male Peveril line became extinct: William Peverel leaving an only daughter, Jane.
  • Jane married Nicholas Meggs of Cambridgeshire. The Meggs’ suffered heavy losses during the Civil War and in 1683 Thomas Meggs sold the manor of Muckleford, a small hamlet within the parish, to make good the family finances. The rest of the parish remained in the hands of the Meggs family until 1770, when Harry Meggs sold it to John Purling. (See our story ‘The Muckleford Treasure’ in the Bradford Peverell category).
