Jennie/Jane Dougherty Was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Jennie/Jane Dougherty was probably born between 1740 and 1745 in the Cherokee Nation, the daughter of white trader Cornelius Dougherty and his unnamed Cherokee wife.

There is no evidence that her mother was a specific Ah Nee Wa Kee.
Little is known of her, although she is recorded as one of the Cherokee who went to Philadelphia in 1791. There is no explanation why she is there, although it is assumed that she was married to one of the chiefs in the delegation.[1]

She married a white man named Crittenden and was the mother of three daughters, Qua la yu ga, Olley, and Ailsey Crittenden. The Moravians made reference in 1814 to her as the grandmother of their student, Celia TImberlake (the daughter of Ailsey Crittenden Timberlake). [2] A reference in Chief John Ross' papers shows that she was still alive in 1826.[3]

She does not appear on the 1835 Cherokee census so she had apparently died by then.

Note regarding Starr's History of the Cherokee Indians, and their Legends and Folklore - The Jennie Crittenden and Jennie Dougherty found in that book are not the same woman as the above Jennie Dougherty. Jennie Crittenden was the daughter of Nannie Downing; she married a man named Jack Wright. The other Jennie Dougherty was born Jennie Buffington and was married to a man named Charles Dougherty.
