After thirty five years of looking for the surname of Samuel's wife referred to in his will as Jane, there have been numerous instances that stated that it was Holmes, yet there is not one reference to where this information originated, nor where she was born. Curiously, when the Scots Irish named their children one of the early given names was the name of the mother of the father's mother, yet in John's twelve known children Jane only appears as the middle name of the last daughter. It is possible of course that a child by that name died or that perhaps Jane was Samuel's last wife and not John's mother. Rebecca, the name of Sarah McCutcheon's mother was given to the first girl born or who survived. She was noted as surviving in his will which was probated 27 JUN 1803
