Biography
Jane Cummings was born in 1640.
Jane Cummings married Chrisopher Jose, sometimes spelled Joce.
Jane Joce wrote her will on Oct 31, 1789 "being of a sound mind and perfect memory tho under great pains and weakness of body". She calls herself "widow" so the will was written some time after her husband Christopher died. [1]
She disposes of her estate to the following people: [1]
my eldest son Richard
my daughter Johanna Sivert
my daughter Margaret White
my son John
My younger daughters Jane and Mary
my son Samuel
my little grandson Thomas Joce
Jane owned a slave, perhaps inherited from her late husband. In the will she bequeaths: [1]
To my daughter Johanna Sivert, my Negro woman and a Gold Ring.
Jane likely died soon after she wrote her will. Late 1689 or easrly 1690.
Research Notes
(Although Jane does not provide her slave's name it must be Elizabeth. Elizabeth is mentioned in the will of daughter Johanna "Sivert" who in turn bequeaths Elizabeth to her sister. Johannah died fairly soon after her mother). Joanna writes, in her own will [1]
I do give & bequeath unto my loving sister Margaret White "my Negro woman Elisabeth" and if my said sister should die she shall return unto my sister Jane.
And in an updated "annex" she writes:
I do order and appoint that my negro woman shall serve my sister [Margaret] White or Jane twenty years and then to be free
Slaves
Elizabeth, left to daughter Johanna
