(Note: Nicholls was exploring ALL likely ancestries for Col. Richard Lee, and wound up committing himself fully to none of them.)

The widow Jane Lee married John Maninge 1632, was buried 24 Feb 1638/39 in Worcester Saint Alban, Worcestershire, after making will in 1635.

Jane Hancock is noted as the eighth child of eight, daughter to Edward Hancock and Alice Jeffrys of Twining, Gloucestershire. Map studies will show Worcester twenty miles from Coton Hall in Shropshire and only twelve miles from Twining in county Gloucester (Thorndale).

Jane Hancock married clothier John Lee of Worcester, Worcestershire; the marriage before 1616 as her first son John Lee was christened 19 Sept 1616; Richard Lee 22 March 1617/18; Edward Lee christened 30 August 1620, but buried 21 April 1624; and Thomas Lee christened 29 May 1622. These children were christened at Saint Martins Parish in the city of Worcester, county Worcester.

John Lee was buried 23 February 1629/30 in Worcester Saint Martin. The widow Jane Lee made administration bond for John Lee's estate with security by her brother Thomas Hancock. Two years later, Jane Lee married John Maninge/Manning on 29 July 1632 in Worcester Saint Martin. John Manning died in 1633, and the widow Jane Manning made a will in 1635 naming her three surviving sons. Her brother Thomas Hancocks was named executor to be assisted by "my brothers" Walter Heming, Richard Lyes, and Thomas Savage. The will of Jane (Hancock) Lee Manning was probated 26 March 1639 (Thorndale).

While it may have gratified early Lees thus to believe that the family founder grew up in genteel surroundings on a manor in Shorpshire, there is no evidence to authenticate this tradition. Instead, the recent identification of Colonel Richard "the Immigrant" Lee’s parents shows that he was from Worcestershire. His father was <John Lee>, (sometimes spelled Lies or Lyes), a clothier whose business was in Worcester, along the road running through the West Midlands. Coton Hall was located twenty miles northward. Richard Lee's mother was Jane Hancock from Twining, a town twelve miles south of Worcester. Her family was also in the cloth trade. The couple probably married before 1616.
