About Jane Massey

Mentioned in Poe will in Orange Co / Chatham Co.. http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/chatham/wills/poe001.txt?fbclid=Iw...

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT sure that this family is correct as related to the children, especially to having 2 children named Mary "Polley" Massey. The one b. c. 1802 is my 2nd great-grandmother. She may be attached to the wrong parents. I'm still researching, will leave this linkage for now so as not to lose thee data, but strongly suspect these are NOT her parents and that all the siblings are not hers.

Jane was from a Quaker family. On 7 April 1792 she was disowned by the Society of Friends for marriage out of unity. On 5 April 1794, Jane condemned her action in marrying out of unity and was apparently accepted back into the Society of Friends and on 2 August, 1794 she was granted a certificate of removal to Spring Monthly Meeting in Alamance Co. NC. [Records of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Union Co. SC]. The fact that the meeting which disowned her was in Union Co. South Carolina indicates that she was living there at the time of her marriage although she was married in Orange County, NC, her birthplace. (Friends living in Orange Co. NC would have belonged to the Spring MM in Alamance Co.)

On 4 August 1794 Jane was received at Spring Monthly meeting in Alamance Co. NC on certificate from Cane Creek MM and on 28 Sep 1805 was granted a certificate to Miami Monthly Meeting in Warren Co. Ohio. None of these Quaker records indicate that James or any of their children were members of the Society of Friends but Jane's various certificates document the family's migration.
