Jane E. Randall Spencer was committed to Eastern Asylum at Pontiac, MI on 7 Jan 1895, after a suicide attempt. She jad apparently been suffering from mental problems for years, because in Tuscola County Probate records were two other entries, one in 1883, declaring that Jane E. Spencer was Incomptent to handle her personal and business affairs.

State of Michigan, Probate Court for said County of Tuscola County At a session ofthe Probate Court held at Cass on Monday the 8th day of October 1883. Present Wm Johnson, Judge of Probate. In the matter ofJane Spencer an alleged incompetent married woman. Testimony taken before the Court in the above cause. Adam Haines being duly sworn deposes and says that he resides in the Township of Gilford Tuscola Co Mich. says he knows Jane E. Spencer the alleged incompetent woman has known her for 20 years and for a larger portion of that time he has lived within 80 yds of my residence for the last year I have seen her as often as three times a week at least; almost 9 years ago I was supervising the Township and the said Jane E. Spencer had an insane attack and I took her to the County Home for safe keeping and where she could have better care than at home. I first learned of her being insane about 6 weeks ago and four weeks or there abouts she came with her sons and I then saw her in this incompetent or insane conditions. I consider her incompetent to transact business or to have the care and management of her estate or to take care of her person for the last six weeks. I think it necessary that a guardian should be appointed to manage her affairs and have the care and custody of her person. Question: Is her husband a proper and suitable person to have the management of her estate and to have the care and custody of her person. Answer: no. For the reason that he is hasty and possesses an ungovernable temper and to difficult for people to get along with him ino rdinary transactions. I understand she has 20 acres of land in the township of Arabela and one acre of Land and house in the village of Reese. I know of no other property belonging to her except her household property. I should say the whole property was worth 900 nine hundred dollars or there abouts.. Adam Haines(signed and notarized) Nevell Orr being duly sworn deposes and says that he resides in the Township of Gilford Tuscola Mich aged 68 years. I live within about half a mile of Mrs. Jane E. Spencer's place, have known her for 18 years and lived close b yher nearly that length of time or until she moved to Reese. I think she is incompetent to take care of herself, or her property for the last 6 weeks or thereabouts. her husband is capable of manage all her business if he would, but he wont do it; or at least don't do it. I honestly say that in my judgment she should have a guardian to look after her and have the care of her affairs. I do not think her husband a suitable person for a guardian I do not know of my own knowledge the value of the Arabela property. I was at Reese one week ago last Saturday and Mrs. Spencer told me that she had bought that house and lot and showed it to me and said she paid 300 three hundred dollars for it.
