Gettysburg Times 1/8/2016 Jane Elizabeth Rice Jones died on Dec. 29, 2015 at the age of 97. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years Philip M. Jones; their son Philip Jr.; her parents Arthur and Edna Royer Rice; and her brother and sister-in-law, Arthur Jr. and Muriel Rice. Born in Biglerville on March 28, 1918, Jane attended Biglerville High School and graduated from the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr in 1936. A 1940 graduate of Smith College, she was the news editor of the Press Board, a Junior Usher, and later head of her 60th Class Reunion and a member of the Smith Alumni Fund Board. Jane was an active member of the Gettysburg community. She was a girl reserve leader in 1941 for the YWCA and a charter member and treasurer of the Gettysburg AAUW. She was a Girl Scout leader and member of the Penn-Laurel Girl Scout Council. A lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church, Jane was baptized there in 1918 and married there in 1941. During her many years of service, she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the church council, and served on the Social Action Committee. Her volunteer activities included serving on the boards of the Adams County Public Library, Adams County Children Services, United Fund, York-Adams Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board, Apple Line Transportation Committee and Adams County Habitat for Humanity. A lifelong love of travel and adventure found her and her husband Phil traveling the world, often with friends and family. She also enjoyed bridge and duplicate. After her childhood in Biglerville, Jane lived the majority of her life in Gettysburg, ten years in Hanover, and the last eighteen months in Aptos, Calif. near her daughter. Jane is survived by her three daughters, Kerry Tranchida of Melbourne, Fla., Jane Barr and her husband Peter of Corralitos, Calif., and Anne Carter and her husband Jeff of Dover, Mass. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Philip Tranchida, Robert Tranchida (Anika Stenkamp), Jennifer Barr Weiss (Adam), Libby Barr Flanagan (T.J.), Sarah Carter Coates (Tim), and Christopher Carter (Phoebe); and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Weiss, Charlie Weiss, and Ian Tranchida. A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Gettysburg. The family will receive friends after the service.
