[The below sketch is written in keeping with the religious heritage involved. Friends (aka Quakers) write dates only in numerical form. Prior to Jan. 1, 1752, England and its American colonies used the Julian calendar, which began on March 25th and ended the following March 24th. March was called the 1st month and the following February the 12th month. Effective Jan. 1, 1752, England and its American colonies converted to the modern Gregorian calendar, in which January is the 1st month and December the 12th month of the year.]

Jane Curtis, dau. of Quakers Thomas and Jane Curtis, was born 11d 2m (Apr.) 1661 at Buckbrook (q.v. Bugbrook), in Northampshire, England. She died testate at Buckingham Twp, Bucks County, Penn. before the 28d 10m (Dec.), 1731, the date of her estate inventory.

Jane was married four times, each husband being a member of the Society of Friends. The 1902 Haines-Sharp Genealogy[*1] mangles her identity, calling her by her third married surname as "Jane Fitchardall, the first wife of John Sharp [Jr.], was of Irish lineage." Jane was neither Irish nor married to her step-son John Sharp, Jr., son of Jane's 4th and last husband John Sharp, Sr. Persons familiar with the family of Edward and Elizabeth (Blossom) Fitzrandolph first of Barnstable, Mass. then of Woodbridge, NJ can easily correct this error to unravel Jane's correct marital history.

On an unknown date by 1684 likely at the Town of Burlington, NJ, Jane married 1) Samuel Ogborne (q.v. Ogbourn, Ogbourne), who died testate at Burlington between 4d and 21d 9m (Nov.) 1694 (dates of his will and inventory.) By this marriage were born three children who are outlined in their father's memorial.

On a unknown date and place prior to 12d 3m (May) 1698, the widow Jane (Curtis) Ogborne married 2) as his 3rd wife, John Hampton (q.v. Hamton.) The latter date is when John "Hamton" and wife Jane sold a house at the Town of Burlington formerly owned by Jane's 1st husband Samuel Ogborne. John Hampton died testate at Freehold, NJ between 23d 11m (Jan.) and 12d 12m (Feb.) 1702/3. One child was born of this marriage:

• iv. Joseph Hampton (q.v. Hamton), born circa 1702 at Freetown, NJ, died 2d 8m (Aug.) 1767 at Wrightstown, Bucks County, Penn.; married Mary Canby 8d 8m (Oct.) 1722 under auspices of the Buckingham Friends of Bucks County, Penn. She died 4d 8m (Aug.) 1794 at Wrightstown.

On 12d 2m (Apr.) 1706 by recorded certificate of marriage (with witness signatures) at Jane's house at Freehold, NJ, the widow Jane (Curtis)(Ogborne) Hampton married 3) as his 2nd wife under auspices of the Shrewsbury Friends, Nathaniel Fitzrandolph, son of Edward Fitzrandolph and Elizabeth Blossom, baptized May 15, 1642 at Barnstable, Mass. At the time of his baptism Nathaniel's parents were members of the Barnstable Congregational Church. He died testate at Woodbridge, NJ between 5d 3m (May) 1713 and 12d 3m (May) 1714 (date of his will and proof.) One child of the marriage:

• v. Benjamin Fitzrandolph, b. per Woodbridge Friends records 23d 10m (Dec.) 1707; he was bequeathed money and personal property in his mother's 1728 will, but he has not been traced further.[*2]

On 15d 2m (Apr.) 1715, Jane, together with her son-in-law Edmund Kinsey and his wife Sarah (nee Ogborne), requested from the Woodbridge Friends a certificate of removal to the Falls Friends at Bucks County, Penn. and were received there 5d 8m (Oct.) 1715. They subsequently requested 7d 8m (Oct.) 1719 removal to an unstated meeting, presumably to either the Buckingham Friends or Wrightstown Friends Meetings in Bucks County.

On 14d 10m (Dec.) 1719, the date given leave to marry by the Haddonfield, NJ Friends, the widow Jane (Curtis)(Ogborne)(Hampton) Fitzrandolph married as his 3rd wife, the writer's ancestor John Sharp, son of William and Hannah Sharp, born 29d 10m (Dec.) 1661 at Flore (q.v. Floore), Northamptonshire, England. He died testate at Evesham Twp, Burlington County, NJ between 17d 3m (May) 1725 and 29d 1m (Mar.) 1727 (dates of his will and inventory.) There was no child of this marriage.

The widow Jane Sharp wrote her will at Buckingham Twp., Bucks County the "8th day of the 6th mo. called August" 1728, which was proved 13d 10m (Dec.) 1731:

• to my son Samuel Ogburn the sum of 8 pounds proclamation money. • to my son Joseph Hampton 12 pounds. • to my son in law Edmond Kinsey 5 pounds. • to my son in law Jonas Ketle [sic] 5 pounds. • to my son Benjamin Fitzrandle twenty pounds and also one bed and 2 pair of sheets 2 pillows and 2 pairs of pillow cases 1 diper table cloth 3 blankets one bird eyed coverlidd one silver spoon one great Bible one great looking glass one pair iron doggs. • to my Grand daughter Jane Engle a great pewter dish. • to my daughter Mary Ketle [sic] 25 pounds. • to my daughter Sarah Kinsey 25 pounds. • after my legacies is payd if any money remains let it be given to my two daughters and Jo[seph] Hampton. • to my daughter Mary's three daughters and to my daughter Sarah's three daughters and to my son Joseph Hampton's one daughter (who are all now living) 7 pounds in Siluer and Gold, twenty shillings apeace each. • to Mary Kinsey and Elizabeth Kinsey each of them one trunck. • all my horse and mares be sold or valued and the value of them to pay all charges to my executors that may accrue to them by funeral expenses or any otherwise whatsoever upon my account and after legacys and other charges are all payd if any thing remains of value I hereby give it to Edmond Kinsey, but if it should so happen that my estate shall fall short of paying my legacyes and all charges then all Legtees shall abate their proportion according to their shares. • I give my executors forty shillings apiece. • Executors: my son in law Edmond Kinsey and Joseph Fell. • Witnesses: John Hill and Elizabeth Fell. • The testator made her mark to the will. • 1731, 28th of Xber [sic 7ber, Sept.] The inventory of her personal estate was exhibited, which was made 18th day of the Ninth Month, 1731, by John Hill and John Walton, and amounted to £118-10-9.

It is assumed Jane was interred without grave marker either at the Buckingham Friends burial ground or the Wrightstown Friends burial ground, latter where son Joseph Hampton was a founding and influential member.

[*2] In the 1943 beginning installment of the multi-part Nathaniel Fitz Randolph of Woodbridge, N.J., Quaker, and His Descendants [The American Genealogist, 97-332], Benjamin is mentioned as the child of Nathaniel by 2nd wife Jane Curtis, but nothing is provided beyond his birth. The author's work concentrated on the descendants of Nathaniel's children by his 1st wife, fellow Quaker Mary Holley (q.v. Holloway). The cited article was the basis of a subsequent 1950 compilation by a second author, who added the belief Benjamin died married with one child, but intestate, at New Brunswick, NJ in 1731.

JEAN CURTIS: She was left in possession of John's land until her death or remarriage and she didn't remarry until 1706. She was the daughter of Thomas and the wife of Samuel Ogborne. This original Quaker record of Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire shows her birth on February 11, 1661, and the two sisters who accompanied her to New Jersey. The Northamptonshire area was the cradle of Quakerism in England from its origins in the 1640s.Samuel married Jane Curtis, an English Quaker emigrant, in 1684 and Jane's Quaker origins are well documented.

She came with her parents to Springfield Township, Burlington County, NJ by 1685. The Minutes of Burlington Monthly Meeting state that, "Jane Ogborne" the daughter of Thomas Curtis hath gone contrary to truth and hath brought dishonor to God and grieved his people. Friends have visited her; she was very tender and doth condemn it.

The Will of Samuel Ogborne, of Burlington County, N.J. dated November 4, 1694 and proved December 8th following, named his wife Jane executrix; mentions his children, not by names; and appoints his brother-in-law Peter Harvey trustee.

The widow Jane Hampton married third on June 12, 1706, under Shrewsbury Monthly Meeting, Nathaniel FitzRandolph of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ who died testate in 1714. Will of Nathaniel FitzRandolph; Executor: "my: said wife to be my whole and sole Executrix." Overseers: "my well Esteemed friends, John Laing and John Rinsey, and my son Samuel Fitz-Randolph and by Counsel help Execute this my last will." Witnesses: John Laing, William Laing, Edward Fitz-Randolph and John Kinsey. The same Laing family was mentioned in John Hampton's will.

1714, May 12. Declaration of "Jean, the widow & Executrix of Nathaniel Fitzrandolph," before Thomas Gordon, Surrogate.

1715, 2 mo, 15 At a monthly meeting, at Woodbridge, of this date, Jane Fitzrandolph requested a certificate of removal for herself, her son-in-law, Edmond Kinsey, and his wife, to Falls Monthly Meeting. At a monthly meeting, at Falls, of this date, Edmond Kinsey, wife, and mother-in-law, produced a certificate of removal from Woodbridge Monthly Meeting.

1719, 8mo., 7. At a monthly meeting, at Falls, of this date, Jane Fitzrandolph was granted, a certificate of removal. Minutes of Falls Monthly Meeting.

John Sharp, of Evesham, Burlington County, and Jane Fitzrandle, widow, were married under Haddonfield Monthly Meeting, Gloucester County, NJ, 1725, 3mo., 17. Will of John Sharp, of Evesham, Burlington County, proved March 29, 1727 mentioned wife, Jane.

1729," 8th day of ye '6-'th month called August."
