    • "Jane White Canfield, an author and sculptor, died of cancer May 23 at her home in Bedford, N.Y. She was 87 years old.
    • "Mrs. Canfield, the wife of Cass Canfield, former publisher of Harper & Row, was born April 29, 1897, in Syracuse.
    • "She grew up in Fayetteville, N.Y., and graduated from Miss Porters School in Farmington, Conn. Trained as a sculptor at the Art Students League in New York, she also studied sculpture privately in Paris. Her work was exhibited in the Whitney Museum and is represented in many private collections. She was the author of two children's books, The Frog Prince (1970) and Swan Cove (1978).
    • "Mrs. Canfield served as director of the American Red Cross Arts and Skills Unit in Washington during World War II and was an early supporter of the Planned Parenthood movement. After attending an International Planned Parenthood Conference in New Delhi in 1938, she said, You can't go to India and not think birth control is the most important thing in the world.
