Jane (unknown) Whitney is still something of a mystery to Whitney researchers. Given the births dates of her children, she was likely born about 1647-1650. Jane married Benjamin Whitney in 1667-1668, in either New Hampshire or Maine. We know Benjamin was in New Hampshire about 1668 as he was taxed there. Torrey puts the marriage date by 1669 at Watertown or Sherborn, but there are no records to be found in either of these towns.
Jane’s name appears on the birth record of her oldest child in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1669: "Jane Whettny (Whitney), daughter of Benjamin and Jane Whettny (Whitney), borne the 29: 7m (1669)."
She also appeared on Joshua's record: "Joshua [Whitney], s. of Benjamin and Jane, [born] Sept. 21, 1687."
Children born to the couple - before 1690: Jane, Benjamin, Timothy, John, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Josiah and Joshua Whitney.
Jane Whitney died in Sherborn, Massachusetts, 14 November 1690: "Jane, w. of Benjamin, Nov. 14 1690."
Benjamin Whitney married Mary Poore in Marlborough, Massachusetts in 13 April 1696.
[Note: the first record of Jane Unknown in Watertown records is the birth record of her daughter Jane Whitney. There is no birth record for her around 1647.]
Children of the first marriage, by wife Jane, were:
John Whitney married Mary Poor in Sherborn, Massachusetts, where he died in 1723.
Benjamin Whitney 1643 – 1723 and Jane 1648 – 1690.
see also, "about section" for her husband Benjamin Whitney. and the link and pasted in extensive information from the Whitney Research Group (WRG).
Apparently, according to: Pierce, Frederick C. "The Descendants of John Whitney, Who Came from London, England to Watertown, Massachusetts in 1635". Chicago, 1895, Jane MAY be maiden name, ARNOLD. But if my recollection serves me well, the Whitney Research Group (WRG) refutes this source as, one of those books written with faulty recordings of family lineages, from the late 1800's where the WHITNEY descendant from which the information was based, either doesn't/didn't provide documentation and/or simply wished to enhance his family's lineage, for prestigious purposes, in the "New World"..
I will go and search WRG, for the entry referring to this book and it's contents and post the link (when located again), as well as, the quote regarding the opinion and grounds thereof, from WRG genealogist: Robert L. Ward. ~ Theresa Renée Eléna Delgado-Tossas
To amend: It was not this book from Pierce, but a book by Henry Melville
