Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth ===The parentage and date and place of birth of Jane Woodward, second wife of William Williams of Wotton-under-Edge, is uncertain. Some family trees show that Jane was born in Synwell (which is the part of Wotton-near-Edge that she and William later lived in) in 1569. No reliable evidence has been found to support either proposition and it is likely that (1) the Synwell place of birth was a guess basedon the assumption that she was born in the same hamlet that she and William lived in and (2) the 1569 date of birth was an estimate based on a combination of Williams' date of birth (about 1555-8) and the facther youngest child was born in 1609.

The fact that Jane and William were married in Cam, Gloucestershire, despite the fact that William lived in Wotton-near-Edge, Gloucestershire, suggests that Jane was from Cam. A search of Cam parish records finds only one baptism of a Jane Woodward in Cam in 1555-1585: the baptism on December 12, 1583 in Cam of "Jane the daughter of John Woodward."<ref name="Bapt"/> This record may well relate to this profile's Jane Woodward and thus suggests that she may have been born in Cam shortly before December 12, 1583 and that her father may have been John Woodward of Cam, the yeoman. Supporting evidence is provided by the 1596 will of a John Woodward of Cam, which includes a bequestto his unmarried daughter Jane.<ref name="FatherWill"/> John Woodward's widow died in November 1603,<ref name="MotherBurial"/> which probably prompted her quick marriage in December 1603 to the much older William Williams, as getting married quickly to a financially established husband would have been highly desirable.

Marriage ===Jane married William Williams in Cam, Gloucestershire on December 14, 1603.<ref name="Marriage"/><ref name="GloucMarriages110"/><ref name="TAG9p142"/><ref name="RoyalAncestryIIp412"/>
