About Janet Beaton of Cranstoun Riddell
In February 1566 Bothwell, in spite of his previous matrimonial engagements — and he had also been united by "handfasting" to Janet Betoun of Cranstoun Riddell — married Jane, daughter of George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly.
On the 25th June 1557, dame Janet Bethune, Lady Buccleuch, and several persons of the name of Scott were accused of going to the kirk of St. Mary of the Lowes, to the number of two hundred, "bodin in feire of war," (that is, arrayed in armour) and breaking open the doors of the said kirk, in order to apprehend the laird of Cranstoun, for his destruction, and for the slaughter of Sir Peter Cranstoun.
