Find a Grave

Birth: Feb. 17, 1822 Clackmannan Clackmannanshire, Scotland

Death: Apr. 12, 1899 Weber County Utah, USA

Janet Fife, daughter of John and Margaret Hunter Fife, was born in Devon Iron Works or Sauchie, Clackmannan, Scotland and died in Clinton, Davis, Utah. At age 17, she married James Mitchell on 13 January 1840/1841 in Clackmannan, Scotland. They had four children: James, John, Andrew (died as a child)and Jannette (died as a child). Janet was the youngest of eight . Her father worked in the coal fields. James and Janet were attracted to the LDS faith and soon made plans to come to Zion because of the persecutions. They arrived in Salt Lake City on 21 September 1851. The Mitchells were called to settle in Cedar City, Utah. Food was scarce and they lived on squash almost all winter. In 1855, Janet, James and family were some of the first to settle in Riverdale, Utah. They became restless and joined the gold rush and went to San Bernardino, California. They missed being part of the LDS church and soon moved back to Riverdale. Here they planted a large fruit orchard. In 1863, 15 years after leaving Scotland, they went to Salt Lake City to do their share of taking care of immigrants who had no place to stay for the winter. They took in a girl named Maren Jensen. Before long, Janet's husband asked permission to marry Maren. Maren and James had nine children together. Janet then moved to Hooper, Utah to live with her son. Janet died on 12 April 1899 at age 77. She had been a widow for nine years.
