About Jantje "Jennie" Kingma
She was born in March 1878 as Jantje Terpstra in the small country village of Hornhuizen, in the former -until 1990- municipality Kloosterburen, in the utter northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of the 46 years aged day laborer Auke Terpstra and Grietje Jolman.
On 14 June 1893 her brother Harm Terpstra (17 y, laborer) arrived on the SS Spaarndam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. His destination was Kensington, nowadays a southern district of Chicago with a large railway station, Cook County, Illinois.
Her mother, day laborer Grietje Jolman died in August 1898 at the age of almost 58 years in the country village of Warfhuizen, in the northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen.
Jantje Terpstra (21 y) arrived on 19 April 1899 on the ship Maasdam at the port of New York, Ellis Island, with her father Auke Terpstra (65 y, widower, laborer) and siblings Germt (18, laborer), Pieterke (16) and Cornelius (14). They departed from Warfhuizen and their destination was Kensington in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
In June 1900 Jantje Terpstra (22, born in March 1878 in Holland, immigrated in 1899, servant) was living in Calumet Township, Ward 34 of [South] Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the home of the 44 years aged widower Leendert Vander Mijden, who was born in Holland, and his 7 children, all born in Illinois.
On 31 October 1900 Jennie (Jantje) Terpstra married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois the one year older John (Tjomme) Kingma, born in Holland too. They had 8 children: Dora, Grace, Anna, Rena, Irene, Albert, Jeanette and John.
