Mercy Flight for Polio Victim Fails
PORT ANGELES, Oct. 1. -- (AP) -- Eight-year-old Jay Woods died here today of infantile paralysis after an incompleted mercy flight to save him. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Woods of Port Angeles.
A Coast Guard helicopter took the child aboard after a physician confirmed a tentative polio diagnosis and appealed to the Guard to fly him to Bremerton for treatment.
The child was given oxygen by the doctor en route but went into a coma, and the physician advised returning to Port Angeles. The boy died a few minutes after the helicopter landed.
