Jean lost his father around 1748. His family experienced great suffering during the Great Upheaval. Trying to escape deportation by the British, Jean, his mother Marguerite and his siblings sought refuge at Aulac, near Beauséjour. Widowed Marguerite was recorded on the 1752 census at Aulac with 2 boys and 3 girls. The children were not named on the censuses. [4] Her son Alexis, a widower, was living on the neighbouring lot. She appeared on the 1755 census at Aulac with 2 boys and 2 girls. [5][6][7]

According to historian André-Carl Vachon, Jean was deported alone to Georgia in 1755 and managed to make his way back to his homeland. In 1757, he fled to Canada, Nouvelle-France (Québec) with his mother Marguerite and his siblings Rosalie, Pierre and Marie-Madeleine. They boarded a ship that left Miramichi on 1 October 1757 with 151 passengers, and disembarked at the port of Québec on the 16th of that month. [8]

It is possible that Jean took part in the Battle of Quebec on September 13, 1759 on the Plains of Abraham since all of the men between the ages 16 and 60 were recruited in the militia. [8]

Jean married Marie Angélique Ducharme on 11 January 1767 in Bécancour. [9][10][11][12] Their marriage contract was signed before Paul Dielle, notary, on 8 January 1767. [13]
