The Carignan-Salieres regiment, which has already served in several wars, was ordered to prepare to go in New-France. A contingent of 1000 men than sailed toward Quebec. On June 18 or 19, a 21-years-old soldier of Lafouille company named Jean-Baptiste Letellieer disembarked in America with the Froment, Chambley and Rougemont company. Jean Baptiste was borne in 1644, from the marriage of Nicolas LeTellier and Elisabeth Delespine, and is from Coutances, La Manche department of Normandie. Enrolled in French troups, he inherited the Lafortune nickname, like it used to be done in the army of that time. Most of the soldiers who disembarked in 1665 went back in Europe from 1668, but several stayed and received a land in order to settle in New-France. Jean-Baptiste was one of them and acquired land in St-Ours, as mentioned in two records, one of January 19, 1671 from A. Adhemar dit St-Martin notary: Vente d'une terre situee a St Our par Jean Letellier dit Lafortune de St Our, a Merry Arpin dit Lepoitevin de Contrecoeur, the other of May 23, 1673 from P. Menard dit Saint-Onge notary: Vente d'une terre situee en la seigneurie de Othre par Louis Jean dit Lafontaine, de St Ours a Jean Tellier dit Lafortune de Dootre. Around 32 of age, Jean-Baptiste has acquired a land located in the Seigneurie de Repentigny, as mentioned on May 1st, 1676. The next year he met Marie Grassiot (Gratiot) and got married on April 28, 1677, in Jean-Baptiste Legardeur presence, lord of the Seigneurie de Repentigny. Jean-Baptiste and Marie had four children: Marie-Anne, Catherine, Marie-Madeleine and Jean Baptiste. Unfortunately, fate struck that young family in fall 1687. In two months our ancestor lost his six-year-old daughter Marie-Madeleine, one-year-old Catherine, his wife Marie aged twenty four and on Christmas Eve, his younger baby Jean-Baptiste aged only ten weeks. Was it caused by an epidemic, a terrible accident or an American Indians assault? That last threat was real and fights were frequent in this area. One year later, on December 1st 1688 in Pte-Aux-Trembles, Jean Baptiste got married with Anne Chenier, daughter of a carpenter. No child seems to be born from that marriage. Two years later, conflicts still existed between the two nations, and issue of one of those battles set Jean-Baptiste's destiny. On July 2nd 1690, twenty-five settlers went toward the Iroquois on the Des Prairies river shores, under Lieutenant Colombet's commands. The battle took place in the La Coulee Grou Fortification, one league down the church. About thirty autochtones and fifteen settlers were killed or died in captivity. One soldier named Jean Delpue dit Parisot died too. So on July 9, 1691, one year after the massacre, Jean-Baptiste married Marie-Renee LORION, Jean Delpue's widow. The couple moved to Pointe-Aux-Trembles and had six children: Marie-Therese, Genivieve, one child dead at birth, Jean-Baptiste, Marie and Joseph. On November 9, 1704 at Varennes, Jean-Baptiste Letellier dit Lafortune died, our first ancestor in America, at sixty years old. His spouse got married two years later, on February 1706 to Jean Tifroy. IN 1690 he fought Mohawks on Montreal Island. His descendents settled mostly in the area of Lanaudiere, north of Montreal, but some went to Ontario and eventually to Michigan.
