Arrival in Canada
After a stay in France where he enlisted in the army, Jean-Baptiste Riel dit Lirlande, originally from the parish of Saint-Pierre (St. Peter), town of Limerick, in the county of the same name in Ireland, arrived in New France (Canada) around 1696 as a soldier in the company of Mr. de Lavaltrie (Compagnie de La Valtrie) in the detachment of Marine troops.
In 1700, he was hospitalized for a few days at the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec (Cité 02-10-1700; Hôtel-Dieu de Québec, 30 years old). Subsequently, he left the army and acquired land from the widow of Lord Margane de Lavaltrie in Lavaltrie.
Marriage On January 21, 1704, Jean-Baptiste Riel dit Lirlande married, in Sorel, Louise-Marie Cottu dit Coutu, daughter of François Coutu and Jeanne Verdon, born May 9, 1684 in Lavaltrie and baptized on May 23 in Lavaltrie (the However, the act would have been recorded in the Contrecoeur register).
Active life

Jean-Baptiste Riel dit L'Irlande (1670–1753) was born in the Diocese of Limerick, Ireland, and married Louise Coutu in 1704. He was the father of at least 11 sons and 8 daughters. In 1710, he was granted a Letter of Naturality, which included the name Jean dit l'Irlande. He died in 1753 and was buried in Saint-Antoine-de-Lavaltrie, Quebec, Canada.
