  Lors du recensement de mars 1666, commandé par l'intendant Talon, est inscrit le nom de jean barillet, 18 ans, domestique des Révérends Jésuites au Cap de la Madeleine.

Arrivé avec les contingents de Soldats de Carignan en 1665 sur le bateau "Pierre Le Gagneur" comme migrant.
Le 20 novembre 1667, il signe Jean Baril comme témoin devant notaire pour l'achat de terre par Pierre Guillet au Cap de la Madeileine. En 1673 , à l'âge de 25 ans, il marie la fille de celui-ci, nommée Marie.
Le mariage a tout probablement eut lieu à Batiscan dans la maison de Nicolas Rivard de la Vigne, lieutenant de la Milice, qui à l'occasion servait pour le culte divin .
Le premmier nom de Baril dont il est fait mention au Canada est Jean Baril, né en France à Orléans, vers 1646. En 1666, il vint au Caanada et s'établit aus Trois-Trvières. Son nom apparaît lors d'un contrat pour l'achatt d'une terre appartenant à Louis Tétreau de Sainte-Anne-de-la-Perade, terre de 4 arpents par 20 qu'il échangea l'anné suivante contre une terre d 2 arpents sur 20 , sise à Batiscan et appartenant à Nicolas Gatineau. Jean Baril, malheureusement n'avait pas fait défriché assez de terrain pour ce qu'exigeait le contrat avec Tétreau et sa terre fit retour au seigneur de Lanaudière par jugement du Conseil Souverain le 11 mars 1674. Notre colon se fixa alors à Batiscan sur un lot dont les voisins étaient Laurent Lefebvre et Louis Guilbault. Il y possédait alors 5 bêtes à cornes et 20 arpents en valeur. aour le dédommager de son éviction, Madame de Lanaudière accorda à Jean Baril, le 5 juin 1682, une concession dans la commune de St-Anne. Le 17 mai 1717, il lui était de plus adjugé la terre de Jean Collet, décédé sans postérité. c<est en 1674 qu'il épousa Marie Guillet, fille de Pierre Guillet et de Jeanne de Launay de St-Père. Marie était née au Canada le 13 octobre 1658. Elle fut ondoyée sous le toit paternel par le Père Albanel, l'un des explorateurs de la Baie d'Udson et, quelques jour plus tard, elle fut baptisée par le Père Ménard qui devait mourir martyr chez les Outaouais. C'était une époque héroique. Beaucoup de familles comptaient des victimes des Indiens dans leurs rangs. Trois autres enfants nés de ce mariage sont mort en bas âge Mais encore une fois, ce mariage ne devait pas durer. Au printemps de 1703, la mort venait chercher Elisabeth Gagnon. Jean n'était plus un jeune homme, il avait cinquante-sept ans et avait un grand besion de quelqu'un pour soccuper des orphelins.
